A Letter to Lucy

A Letter to Lucy

Yesterday was the first day we woke up in a new Chapter, the one without you in it.

I thought I heard you bark to be let out of your kennel this morning and I keep catching myself looking for you when I glance out the window - you always loved to go exploring on the farm and I loved to see where you were off to…

Your leash is still sitting on the front porch, not because you needed one on the fenced property, but because Emma used to like to put it on and take you for walks - and you’d always oblige.

Little tufts of your fur are still in the spots you used to lay out front the house, and the mudroom still smells a bit like you, from when you spent your last night with us.

We went to do some retail therapy yesterday (and run some errands I didn’t want to do when you weren’t feeling well) and there was no one to greet us at the gate when we got home.

We all miss you but Simon misses you the most of all! You grew up together, were little and chubby together, and had the best bond. Simon loves a snuggle and you were always up for one.

You were the best babysitter and loved to keep an eye on Emma when she was outside. And even though you didn’t get to know Annabelle very long, you always checked on her when she cried and couldn’t resist giving her a little kiss on her head or toes.

You were absolutely the sweetest, most loving girl, and there is no one I would have rather had stealing sips of my coffee or sitting on my feet for all of these years. You were my companion and my protector and my right hand girl with the kids.

You weren’t always a farm dog, but I think you blossomed here! You just wanted to be with your people and you loved being able to tag along for farm chores, and even rounding up goats. And you were always off on adventure or swimming in the dugout!

You have a beautiful final resting place - between two large trees - and I hope you’ll be comfortable there. It’s the perfect spot to catch a prairie sunset or see the kids dirt biking… and I think a certain boy will be out there often to visit you.

You might not be here physically with us anymore, but you left an imprint on our hearts, and on the farm, and I think I’ll forever see you amongst the shadows of the trees and in the prairie fields.

Run free and rest easy my sweet girl 🫶🏼
