Emma Mae’s Birth Story
Our sweet, spunky Emma Mae is 5 today! I thought I’d take a little trip down memory lane and share (what I can remember of) her birth story…
Picture this, it’s 2019… Shane and I had made the decision that we were going to pursue a move to Texas, but we thought we’d like to have another baby while we waited on logistics. We found out we were expecting our 3rd baby and life was good… it was full with homeschooling, plugging away at renovating our log cabin, and Shane building his construction business. Enter 2020…
We started the year by surprising our oldest, Sophie, with a trip to Canmore for her 9th birthday… and we were all SO sick! We all know what happened by the time March rolled around. And with expecting a baby, things really got shaken up! The hospital birth we had planned all of a sudden looked a lot less appealing, and we didn’t even know what life would look like when we welcomed another baby into the world.
We had always been intrigued, but not super comfortable, with the idea of a home birth, but it turned out to be the best happy accident! The details are a little - ok a lot - fuzzy, but I know labour started June 9th for me. I was very overdue, and knew it was time. My mum had been staying with us and went to town to get me my favourite salad from Freshii, and Shane decided to stay home from work. I bounced on my ball, napped, snacked when I could, and when my midwife came to check on me that evening, she broke my waters. Things progressed from there and before I knew it, it was the wee hours of the morning, I was completely exhausted, and Emma Mae made her long awaited appearance! I got some time to snuggle, had a nice shower, and hoped back into my own bed while the midwives took measurements and did their exam. The sun was just starting to rise as our midwife left, and not long after, two very excited kiddos came running into our room to meet their new baby sister!
It doesn’t matter that I don’t remember all of the little details, because I remember the way it made me feel to be able to have my child in my own home. It was such a sweet experience and one I’m truly grateful to have had!
Emma Mae
Born at home @ 2:32am
9lbs,2oz - 21inches
Emma has been our little ray of sunshine since the day she was born, and has brought so much fun and joy into our lives! She’s sweet and sassy and absolutely loves quality time with her crew - whether it’s helping daddy in the garage, or doing animal chores with the big kids, or helping cook with me. And she has taken her new role or big sister very seriously and is so loving with Annabelle!
Happy 5th Birthday my sweet sunshine girl!
Until I blog again,
Alex
